FOOTBALL: Poor defending costs Wakes dear

POTTON UNITED 3 BOURNE TOWN 3: Darren Munton bemoaned Bourne’s defending after this Saturday UCL Division One thriller.

The Wakes led three times at The Hollow, but couldn’t hold on for what would have been a first win at Potton in eight visits.

Tom Caldicott put Bourne ahead on five minutes, but Gary Ansell-Carter (8) soon levelled. John Currall (26) then put the Wakes back ahead, only for Steve Muggridge (40) to restore parity.

Aaron Jesson (57) thought he’d won it for the visitors, but Steve Thomas (77) earned a point for the hosts.

Bourne boss Munton said: “The defending was shambolic. “I thought we had got past the stage where we made silly mistakes – but at times it was comical. We gifted them three replies. Having gone in front three times we were naive. We have done well lately but the boys looked jaded.”

Wakes: Bellairs, Elgar, Cardall, McDonnell, Jesson, Moss, Rook, Wood (Tom Waumsley), Currall (Penney), Feeley (Hood), Caldicott.

Saturday: Wakes v AFC Rushden & Diamonds (3pm).
