Irchester Utd 1 (Whitby 42) Spalding Utd 11: (Tolley 8,15,35&51, Cotton 53,81&82, Kennedy 57&89, James 5, Hall 21): New signings Dan Cotton and Chris Hall wasted no time making their mark as the Tulips notched their biggest win in years.
Cotton – signed from Soham Town Rangers in midweek – grabbed a second-half hat-trick while Hall, who has been with North Ferriby United in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division, scored too.
The Tulips have scored 16 in their last two league games and, incredibly, their tally on Saturday could have been greater.
Manager Pat Rayment said: “We could have had 20 but for the keeper, who made some great saves.
“Dan Cotton made a massive difference and Chris Hall looks good but he’ll need another three or four games before he’s fully match fit.
“We look frightening going forward but I’m still in the market place for a centre half.”
Rayment will speak to Wisbech Town’s Paul Cousins after their FA Cup replay with Kettering Town tonight.
Striker Shane Tolley grabbed four goals on Saturday to take his tally to seven in two games.
Tom James got things under way with a fifth-minute strike before Tolley scored either side of Hall’s goal.
A terrific 25-yard strike by Irchester’s Ross Whitby made it 4-1 but there was still time left in the first half for Tolley to complete a hat-trick.
The Northamptonshire side knew they faced a monumental task in the second period with the Tulips in rampant mood.
Tolley completed his personal tally in the 51st minute with a neat lob and two minutes later Cotton put the finishing touch to a Francis Green cross.
Then Luke Kennedy slotted in a free kick for 8-1.
Cotton completed his hat-trick with goals on 81 and 82 minutes and Kennedy grabbed his second a minute from time.
