Spalding United reignited their promotion push with a 5-1 UCL Premier Division victory over Cogenhoe United on Tuesday night, while champions Holbeach United lost 2-0 at St Ives Town and Deeping Rangers were beaten 1-0 by Yaxley in the semi-final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup.
With the title decided at the weekend, all eyes are now on the race for second – and Spalding showed they are still up for the fight with a dominant display in their final home game of the season.
Chris Hall superbly slotted them ahead inside four minutes, but plucky Cogenhoe levelled soon after when Jack Bowen smashed home from 25 yards.
Dan Cotton restored the Tulips’ lead with a back post header (45), before Jake Gibson (64) drilled home a fine third after a neat move involving Lee Canoville and Lee Beeson.
Gibson then volleyed a close-range fourth from a corner three minutes from time, before Tony Battersby fired the fifth in injury time after a slick cross from Hall.
However, Spalding remain four points behind St Ives – with a game in hand – after they defeated depleted Holbeach at Westwood Road.
Dom Lawless put the Saints ahead in the first period, with Karl Gibbs adding the second after the break.
The loss means the Tigers can no longer reach 100 points for the season and ends their 12-game unbeaten run in the league.
There was a defeat for Deeping too, as an Ondre Odain strike ended their hopes of lifting the Hinchingbrooke Cup.
Scott Ginty blasted a second-half penalty over the bar as Yaxley booked their place in the final.
Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox beat Parson Drove 4-0 at Broad Lane to move five points clear at the top of Peterborough and District Premier Division.
