DEEPING RANGERS 2 (Heron 10, Evans 77) BELPER TOWN 1 (Spargo 74): RANGERS progressed through to the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday with a shock win against Evo-Stik League side Belper Town.

Goals from Matt Heron and Matty Evans either side of half time ensured a £1,500 pay-day for Deeping, who will host New Mills in the next round.

Player/manager Tuncay Korkmaz said: “I thought it was a fairly even match, but overall over the 90 minutes we deserved it. The lads really rose to the challenge against a team who are at a higher level.

“We went into this competition to have some fun and see how far we could get. The money is great for the club so let’s hope we can get to the next round and challenge ourselves against better opposition.”

The home side started brightest and found themselves in front after ten minutes. Midfielder Kevin Gilbert’s superb cross was met at the back post by Heron, who headed home the opener.

Rangers almost doubled their lead 15 minutes later. Evans burst forward down the right wing to meet Mark Jones’ cross-field pass, but hit his shot wide.

The last 15 minutes however belonged to Belper, who’s best chance fell to ex-Derby County player Paris Simmons. His header crashed against the side netting following a good counter-attack.

Belper started the second half much as they had finished the first, and although Rangers’ keeper James Doughty pulled off some fine saves, he was helpless on 70 minutes when Tommy Hanigan’s header crashed against the post.

Five minutes later Belper got the equaliser. Substitute Ben Spargo found himself one on one and slotted his shot into the bottom right-hand corner, having only been on the pitch for a few minutes.

Rangers replied almost immediately though and Heron was again involved after laying in Evans, the full back thundered his shot into the top of the net to give his side the lead once more.

Belper ensured a tense end to the game but some good defending from the home side prevented them from finding the goal they needed to force a replay.

Rangers will now face New Mills at Outgang Road in the First Qualifying Round, another side from the Evo-Stik League, and will no doubt be hoping to cause another cup upset.

That tie will take place on September 19 (3pm).

Rangers: Doughty, Evans, K Jones, Tinkler, Fenton, M Jones, Weston, Gilbert, Heron, Moreman (Oliver 45), Battersby (Birtles 79). Not used: Korkmaz.

• Tonight’s scheduled UCL Premier Division derby clash between Deeping and Holbeach United at Outgang Road has been called off after the Tigers’ draw with Hucknall Town in the FA Cup.

This Saturday Deeping host Kempston Rovers (3pm).

• TWO missed penalties in the last five minutes spared Deeping Reserves’s blushes on Saturday as they picked up a 1-1 draw at Oundle Town.

Matt Atkins had given Andy Bailey’s men the lead with a strike early in the second half, but Dean Clarke levelled soon after.

In the closing stages Darren Paling fired a penalty wide for Oundle, before a last-gasp Chris Beeby spot-kick was blasted over.

Deeping: Mitchell, MacNicol, Leisner, Simpson, Parr, Hepworth, Waumsley, Vanner, Bradbury, Atkins, Goodliffe (Weston). Not used: Bailey, Lowndes.
