Deeping Rangers 2 (M Byrne 8 Holt 40) Desborough Town 1 (K Byrne 48): Deeping climbed to third place in the Chromasport UCL Premier Division on Saturday.
Both teams came into the game on the back of some good results, and it was the visitors who almost opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute, Rangers just managing to scoop the ball off the line when a goal seemed certain.
But it was Deeping who did take the lead after eight minutes through Michael Byrne.
Nick Jackson was missing from the line-up for Rangers after suffering severe concussion in the 3-1 win at Peterborough Northern Star on Tuesday.
However, Spencer Tinkler did a good job of covering for him and Deeping had much of the first-half play.
Desborough keeper Lavin made some tremendous saves – Brader, Byrne and Burton-Jones all denied.
However, as the half drew to a close, Brader was fed out wide on the left wing and he crossed for Ciaran Holt to net at the near post.
For Rangers, the second half went far from plan. Desborough’s Kevin Byrne – brother of the Rangers’ number nine – nodded a long, floated free kick over Doughty.
And then Chris Logan saw red for Rangers, receiving two cautions in double quick time.
Desborough pushed on to look for a second goal, Kevin Byrne seeing his 75th minute strikehit hit the crossbar.
Rangers just about held on.
