FOOTBALL: Debut double for King as Tulips reach last 16 of Vase

Gary King hit a debut double for Spalding United as they superbly came from behind to win 2-1 at Ely City in the fourth round of the FA Vase on Tuesday night.

Hosts Ely started much the better and deserved went ahead when Austin Diaper finished superbly on 11 minutes.

They had chances to go further ahead, but the Tulips rallied and earned a penalty on 31 minutes when skipper Lee Canoville was tripped in the box.

Ex-Stamford striker King duly stepped up to net from the spot – and he added his second with a neat sliding finish four minutes later.

Spalding keeper Lee Dury was forced to make a number of top saves after the break as Ely searched for a late leveller – even hitting the post following a scramble in the closing stages.

TJ Nightingale had two great chances to wrap the win up, but it mattered little for Pat Rayment’s side – who now progress to host Guernsey in the last 16 on February 9.

Meanwhile, the Hinchingbrooke Cup quarter final between Bourne Town and Deeping Rangers was postponed. The Abbey Lawn surface wasn’t deemed fit to play.
