Tividale 1, Spalding United 1

A play-off place is no longer in Spalding’s hands as they were held to a draw at in-form Tividale tonight (Tuesday).

The Tulips’ third 1-1 draw sees them drop out of the play-off places with one game to go. They now need to win their final away game at Romulus on Saturday and hope for a couple of other results to go their way.

Boss Pat Rayment said after the game: ‘We’ve only got ourselves to blame after the last three games. We should be in the play-offs now. We still have an outside chance but basically we’ve blown it.”

It had all started brightly for the Tulips. Jamie Thurlbourne saw a 14th minute free kick saved and Tom Waumsley had a penalty appeal turned down. But then Tulips defender Jamie Stevens had to make a great tackle on the edge of the box before stopper Pycock made a good save.

Pycock then had to rush out of his area to clear the ball as Spalding failed to take control, Waumsely and Nolan struggling to keep possession up front.

The visitors took the lead, however, after 34 minutes when Matt Nolan turned in on the line for the second game running. A Thurlbourne throw was flicked on by Stainfield and Waumsley knocked the ball towards goal before his strike partner scored.

Soon after Waumsley should have made it two but volleyed over.

Key defender Nathan Stainfield – who played in pain with a strapped shoulder in the first half – failed to reappear after the break, replaced by McGovern, with Hall dropping into central defence.

Spalding tried to hold on to the narrow lead but were nearly in trouble when the indecisive Pycock was lucky a volley flew wide when he could not decide whether to come out or not, and Spalding were just 14 minutes away from the win they needed when Edwards equalised for the home team.

Spalding boss Pat Rayment threw on Vieira and Beeson for Nolan and Thurlbourne but his team offered little and it was the home side that went closer when Pycock cleared off his line.
