THREE South Holland schools stormed to team titles at the 2011 South Lincolnshire Schools Cross Country Championships.
In the under-17 girls race, the runners representing University Academy Holbeach (UAH) achieved a four point victory over girls from Sir John Gleed to carry off the title.
The two senior age group championships were also claimed by local schools, with Gleed sixth form winning the U/19 boys crown and Spalding High taking the honours in the U/19 girls event.
The victorious year ten and 11 girls from Holbeach had their first two finishers in the top ten positions, with H Wise third and C Jones eighth.
Their remaining four team members were inside the first 28 runners.
Gleed Girls were led to glory O Shakespere (13th), R Perkins (14th) and EM Stokes (16th), while Spalding High School’s A Dalton was second in the individual championship.
In the U/19 boys race, Lloyd Kempson was first home to give Gleed an excellent start in the team stakes. In support, David De Sa claimed third place, with C Wallace (15th) and T Coaten (20th) scoring well.
The Gleed representatives finished with a total of 39 points for a one point advantage over their nearest rivals Deepings.
Third-placed Spalding High had N Martin in fourth position, while the highest finisher for Spalding Grammar was D Patterson in sixth place. In the U/19 girls competition, Spalding High were the only school to finish a full team.
However, UAH representative Grace Mullins was the clear winner of the individual title.
Spalding High’s challenge was spearheaded by S Beavis in third place, with N Segal (4th), Emily MaltbyMaltby (6th) and P Kierman (7th) securing the championship for their school.school.
Spalding Grammar’s runners claimed second place in the U/13 boys section, finishing just two points behind champions Bourne Grammar.
The counters were led in by M Winson who was fourth, with M Ellis (8th) providing excellent support ahead of H Wardman (14th) and F Peters (15th), who both produced solid performances.
University Academy Holbeach were the sixth team, Thomas Cowley (Donington) eighth and Gleed Boys 11th.
At U/13 girls level, Spalding High secured third team position with University Academy Holbeach fifth and Thomas Cowley sixth.
Winner of the individual title for Spalding High was R Freeson, who had a 20 second advantage over her nearest rival.
Second counter for the team was E Young (9th), ahead of K Amess (11th) – contributing to the team total of 113 points. Gleed’s boys finished fourth in the U/15 boys championships, with R Ambrose their highest finisher in 18th place. In the same age group, Spalding Grammar secured fifth thanks to P Spurdens’ fine fourth place.
Thomas Cowley’s U/15 girls team claimed fifth place, with Spalding High and UAH unable to close in the required number of runners to secure a team position.
Spalding Grammar School competitors ran into third team place in the U/17 boys championship for Year 10 and 11 athletes and had C Bird (8th) as their front runner. UAH student J Rackham was clear winner of the individual title and helped steer his team to fifth place on the team results table, while Thomas Cowley were ninth and Gleed Boys 10th.
