Awesome Alex Hampson finished a fantastic fifth at the National Cross Country Championships held at a Sunderland last Saturday.

Hampson was one of seven Bourne-based Nene Valley Harriers to race at the snow-hit event and by far the best finisher. After winning the Southern Counties title seven days earlier, Hampson was again well to the fore and ran with confidence to finish superbly in the Under -5 boys race, out of a field of 230 runners. He finished just 33 seconds behind the winner.

Following Hampson home for Nene in the U15s’ race were Cameron Marshall, in his first cross country season, crossing the line in 104th with Ollie Bowling in 117th, Will Baker, another first season runner, in 137th and Austin Herbert close behind.

James McCrae (98th) broke into the top 100 in the Under-17s race, while Megan Ellison crossed the line barefoot in the Under-13 girls race after losing both her spikes on the muddy course. She finished just ahead of Molly Bennett and Leah Clark.
