AFTER a busy close-season, Spalding Town Cricket Club get their preparations for the new campaign under way next month.

Town kick off their indoor net sessions at Spalding Grammar School’s sports hall on Sunday, February 5. This will continue every weekend until the start of the season, with all players old and new welcome to attend.

Ambitious Town are committed to making this season a successful one both on and off the field. For the first time, they will have four teams playing league cricket over a weekend.

There has been a change of captaincy in the first team too, with Rob Ambrose taking over from Simon Juckes. Tom Dale stays in charge of the second team, with Rick Dale at the helm in the thirds and James Clarke running the newly-formed academy XI on a Sunday.

Town’s academy teams have already started their indoor net practice, which is taking place at the Grammar’s sports hall. The under-11 and under-13 age groups train from 9am-11am on a Saturday, with the under-15s and under-17s in session on a Sunday (noon-2pm). Any new players interested are more than welcome to attend.

All of the teams will be playing in the South Lincs and Border Youth League this season – and after an impressive campaign last year, are looking to expand in the summer months by opening practice sessions for five to 12 year-olds on Monday evenings.

Spalding are also aiming to get cricket into local junior schools this year, in a bid to give children a better chance of learning and playing the game.

A new digital scoreboard will be in place for the start of the campaign too, which means Spalding will take another step closer towards achieving the ECB Clubmark accreditation – something they will be striving towards this year.
