With two league games to go, Spalding Rugby Club are out of the relegation zone again.

They recorded an impressive 26-19 home victory over title contenders Ashbourne in Midlands Two East (North) on Saturday to move three points above Mansfield in the fight for survival.

We have really pulled together when we needed to get the job done – it’s just a shame we got ourselves into this position.

Sam Cooke

Captain Sam Cooke said: “It was a fantastic result and just what we needed.

“Hopefully this has sent a shockwave to Mansfield who wouldn’t have expected us to pick up a bonus point win.

“We’ve certainly made it a lot harder for them and we knew this was the toughest fixture in our last three games of the season.

“We set a target of three wins.

“I’m really proud of all the players. We have really pulled together when we needed to get the job done – it’s just a shame we got ourselves into this position.

“Now we can go to Bakewell Mannerians on Saturday full of confidence.

“We have made life a lot easier for ourselves but we need to do the same again as this could be a critical week in our season.”
