Club records rolled as Nene Valley Harriers sent three athletes to the England Athletics under-20 and under-23 championships at Bedford over the weekend.

On Saturday, Emily Maltby came fourth in a very tight under-20 100m heat.

The qualifying was first two plus a pair of fastest losers. She ran a splendid club record time of 12.37secs – but finished fourth in the heat, with second place clocking 12.33secs.

Despite very windy conditions on the day, this was a legal run as the wind dropped following a downpour.

On the same day Georgie Ivens started the day ranked 16th, based on the entries for the under-23 400m.

She finished third in her heat with 56.84secs, just nine one hundredths from her own club record running into a very strong head wind (3.5m/s) on the back straight.

Most athletes in the same event had been over 1.5 seconds down on their personal bests. This was quick enough for her to qualify for the final ahead of a number of known athletes at this level.

In Ivens’ first national (English Schools excepted) final, she competed well and was just beaten into seventh place over the last few meters.

Still, she recorded a club record time of 56.68secs.

The other Nene Valley athlete competing in thee championships was Daz Holding.

He came seveth in his under-23 200m heat with a season’s best time of 22.73secs.
