Nene Valley Harriers should have secured another year in Southern League Division One with a third-place finish in the penultimate meeting of the season at Crawley.

The club’s ladies enjoyed a magnificent day – finishing 17 points clear of the field – while the men also performed with credit with many filling in for events they wouldn’t normally consider in order to collect vital points.

Individual performance of the day came from Emma Hornsby who won the ladies long jump by over half a metre with a leap of 5.91m, extending her own club record.

Hornsby also won the B 100m and the A high jump with club-mates Lily Hughes and Rose Jacobs winning the A sprint and the B high jump respectively.

Double wins were also recorded by throwers Andrea Jenkins and Becki Hall plus Emily Maltby (triple jump and 100m hurdles).

Maltby passed her season’s best three times in the triple jump before finishing with 11.37m.

The men’s team recorded a double win in the 110m hurdles through Max Everest and David Bush while maximum points were also gained by Martin Tinkler in the discus and Sam Wilson in the B string hammer.

The division remains tight ahead of the final fixture in Norwich on August 20.
