LILY Hughes just missed out on a place in the 100m final at the Aviva English Schools Championships over the weekend.
The Spalding High School pupil, who competed in the 200m at the Gateshead event last year, was disappointed to finish third in her junior girls heat.
Representing Lincolnshire, the 14-year-old clocked a time of 12.82secs, but was edged out by Kent’s Shannon Hylton (12.62secs) – who went on to win bronze in the final – and London’s Dorica Santos (12.77secs).
Kirton-based Hughes, who runs for Nene Valley Harriers, has a personal best of 12.6secs – which would have been enough to secure fifth place in the final.
She was the only Lincolnshire athlete represented in the junior girls 100m event, making her the best in the county.
