Spalding RFC 41 Huntingdon 15
This was a must win encounter for Spalding if they were to consolidate their position in Midlands Two East, writes Brian Stray.
And win they did, sending their supporters home with memories of seven fine tries, four of which came in a golden period in the second half.
Like Town, Huntingdon are not enjoying the best of seasons and the early play demonstrated the importance of the fixture to both teams.
Spalding were the first to threaten but Huntingdon were strong in defence and kept their line intact.
Gradually the situation changed and it was Town's turn to defend. Such was the pattern of play until close on the half hour mark when Dirk van den Berg, returning at full back, split the defence wide open with a fine attack from the halfway line.
His pace took him to the line and with Jim Bushell's conversion, Town had a lead which was beginning to look unlikely.
But Huntingdon replied immediately. Attempting to open play from the restart, an over-confident pass in the midfield was intercepted and their centre was through for a score near the posts. Fortunately for Town, the conversion attempt failed.
Spalding's forwards, however, were having to show their character in containing a heavier and experienced outfit, particularly in the front row.
To their credit, they stuck to their task and with control they exercised in the line-out, they were providing sufficient possession for their team to go forward.
As the half drew to a close, van den Berg joined the line and his well-timed pass to Vernon Matthee on the left enabled the winger to touch down wide out for an unconverted try, crucially allowing Town to go into the second period with the advantage.
But the outcome of the match was far from evident at this stage with the visitors adding to their tally with a penalty and reducing their deficit to an easily obtainable few points.
Spalding had different ideas and there followed a period of attacking rugby of the highest standard and, with it, the Huntingdon resistance was swept aside.
First Jamie Anthony flew down the left wing to touch down in the corner. The try was again unconverted but better was to follow.
Mark Croft, making a very promising debut as open side flanker, took the ball from the restart, beat tackler after tackler before putting Matthee into space to complete a magnificent period of play.
Town continued to push home their advantage.
Van den Berg again showed his class with a try converted by Bushell.
Two minutes later Bushell himself was through for a try which he could not convert but when Thom Williamson sped into space from his own half, leaving the defence standing, to touch down to the right of the posts, Bushell did convert.
Spalding had cast aside what had been competent opposition.
To their credit, Huntingdon spent the remaining minutes attempting to restore some sanity to the game.
Their reward was a penalty try but they had been totally outplayed in the second period.
