SPALDING men's 1st team earned a 3-3 draw at Burghley Park in South Lincs Scratch League Division One.

Burghley are always formidable opposition on their own course and the Spalding team were well satisfied to come away with a point.

Although it's early days, with all six teams having played two games each, Spalding top the league by a single point.

Spalding winners: Gary Palmer and Richard Laud (4&3), Steve Wade and Andy Grimwood and Mark Mitchell & Daniel Hines (both 2&1).

  • The 2nd team put their first league point on the board, a 3-3 home draw against their counterparts from Burghley Park. This came after losing 4.5-1.5 the previous week at Sleaford.

  • The club suffered a narrow defeat in a social match at King's Lynn, going down 3-2 with one game halved.

Carl Reedman & Paul Johnson (2&1) and Stewart Sharpe & Max Ellis (1up) were Spalding's winning pairs with Phil Thorold & David Brotherton getting a half.

  • The warm, sunny weather ensured there was a record number of entries in the May Bank Holiday Texas Scramble competition with 30 teams of four enjoying the conditions.

The winning quartet was Les Mitchell, Steve Baxendale, Ken Murray and Paul Hooper-Roe with a nett 55.95.

In second place were Keith Moore, Doug Garfoot, Jane Toal and Lisa Howling, just 0.07 adrift. Third place went to Andy and Carol Thomas, Rod Filby and Mags McArdle.

  • The 3rd team's winning run continued in their social match against Sandilands, Sutton-on Sea, beating them 5-1 at the Surfleet course.

Spalding winners: Alan Singer and Andy Sneddon (6&5), Keith Moore and Keith Williams, Brian Naylor and John Taylor, Alan Roper and Bernard Herbert (all 2up), and Kevin Siddle and Alan Rudkin (1 up).

  • Spalding Ladies' May Medal, sponsored by Hills of Spalding, was played in glorious sunshine.

However, with the course playing tough this spring, good scores were hard to achieve.

But it was no problem for Sue Grimwood, the overall winner and Gold Medal qualifier, with a nett 74.

Grimwood, who got a handicap reduction of one shot, and the other winners were presented with their prizes by David Turner, of Hills, who had donated them.

    Results (nett scores): Cat 0-18: 1st Elaine Hancock 76; 2nd Jean White 76; 3rd Avril Norton 79. Cat 19-29: 1st Margaret Barkway 78; 2nd Gill Haydon 79; 3rd Pam Smith 79.
