FOOTBALL: Pearson calls tune at Tulips' do
CENTRE half Shaun Pearson almost swept the board at Spalding United's end of season awards do.
The Tulips endured one of their worst seasons on record – typified by the karaoke machine breaking down at last Saturday's presentation event – but there were some high spots and fine individual performances, particularly from Pearson whose efforts were rewarded with a hat-trick of awards.
He was named players' player of the year, supporters' player of the year and managers' players of the year, the latter being a joint decision between former managers Phil Hubbard and Domenic Genovese and current boss Alan Biley.
Pearson made his club debut in the Tulips' best result of the season, the 4-2 victory at Grantham in early November last year.
The other main award for the most man-of-the-match nominations throughout the season went to top goalscorer Ben Garrick.
The event at the Royal Mail Cart pub was enjoyed by around 50 club officials, players and friends.
Club chairman Chris Toynton paid tribute to the behind the scenes work carried out by a small and dedicated group of people.
He made particular mention of Graham Chappell, who had followed his late father John into the club president's chair, and his mother Avis.
He said: "Graham has given overwhelming support to myself and put in a lot of time and effort into ensuring that the structure of the club has been stabilised and is running smoothly. He has been tremendous."
Others mentioned, who all received a "prize" were Julie, "Tilly" and Rachel Gedney, Jean Gray, Phil Brennan, "Ogy" Lane, Nev and Jenny Healey, Ray Smith, Terry Goddard, Ray Tucker and Jack Goddard.
Because of the demise of Alsager Town, the Tulips have been given a reprieve and will compete in the UniBond League again next season and Toynton said that was under no illiusions - the going would again be tough on the field of play.
He added: "But I have confidence in the ability of manager Alan Biley to provide us, the fans and indeed the town, with the success we so desperately desire."
