THE WIDOW of one of the founders of a Spalding-based haulage firm was on hand to cut the ribbon to open a new road named in her husband’s memory.

Mary Welch did the honours at a ceremony to mark the official opening of Jim Welch Way, which will provide a second entrance to Fowler Welch’s site in West Marsh Road.

Mr Welch started the company in 1988 with Mo Fowler – both men died within an hour of each other on the same day in 2009.

More than 30 former and current employees of the firm, as well as business managers who knew Jim, attended the ceremony conducted by managing director Nick Hay.

Non-executive director David Inglis, who worked with Jim for many years, also made a speech.

Fowler Welch marketing manager Elaine Wymant said: “Jim’s daughter and grandchildren were also there and I think they found it quite emotional and a proud moment.”

The new road will mean that cars and lorries can use separate road entrances into the site to help make it safer.
