Terry Day, who lives in Spalding, was temporary leading fireman at the time of The White Horse fire.

He recalls they pumped water from the River Welland to tackle the flames.

He said: “It was empty because they were doing restoration work, but you never want a thatch in your career because they are so hard. We took 27 tonnes of straw off the roof.”

Nearby roads were closed to traffic.
