The last train to pass through Deeping St James using the signal box hooted as people gathered to watch the moment on Friday.

Work has now started to dismantle, rather than demolish, the signal box as part of the scheme to modernise the line between Doncaster and Peterborough by Network Rail, but the focus has now turned to what could happen to the signal box on Winsover Road in Spalding.

South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes said: “I have entered into discussions about the signal box and I am keen to get a commitment on that with Network Rail.

“I’ve also had discussions with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport about the signal box. The Culture Minister Sajid Javid MP has written to Network Rail immediately saying that he would hope that they would delay their plans for demolition so they can meet with the community to come to some agreement.”

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We have had no formal approach about this box’s future from any local organisation.

“We had one provisional offer from a resident to buy the box, but this is a potentially complex process, and is currently being explored.”
