Whaplode home of darts team becomes business for Mick and Michelle

Mick Allen went to great lengths to provide a home for his darts team.

Mick and his wife Michelle, who was nursing for over 30 years, turned publicans when they heard the Whaplode pub where the team had moved to was closing down.

“We hadn’t even had a home game in the pub,” said former fork lift truck driver Mick, who took over the Lamb & Flag with Michelle about five years ago.

It wasn’t entirely new to them as they had been doing a little bit of outside bar work and discos, accompanied by their son Shane, who was the family member with bar experience.

Five years on and they have Superleague darts teams on Sunday and Monday, a ladies’ team on Tuesday and three teams on Friday.

They have just started in-house pool on Wednesday night and on Thursday there are three pool teams. From the end of October there will be a Sunday pool team too.

Shane also works at the pub and he and his mum do the cooking, something that hasn’t happened during a recent refurbishment, although Michelle plans to start it up again as soon as the work is finished.

She said: “We can’t thank our customers enough.”
