He wants to convert a flat-roofed, domestic garage on the Weston Village Stores site in Small Drove to a chippy so villagers don’t have to head off to Moulton or Spalding when they fancy one of Britain’s best-loved dishes.
They haven’t got any takeaways and they keep asking me (to open one).Village stores owner Vanraj Odedra
Mr Odedra said there isn’t a takeaway in Weston and not everyone in the community owns a car.
He said: “We came here at Christmas in 2013 and we have since been serving the local community around here and we keep listening to people.
“They haven’t got any takeaways and they keep asking me (to open one). It’s purely for my customers.”
If planning consent is granted, Mr Odedra hopes to have the fish and chip shop open by the end of November or before Christmas at the latest.
Frying expertise is already within the family, particularly with his sister-in-law Devi Khunti, who will run it with her husband, Ram.
Mr Odedra said his sister-in-law worked for more than three years in a fish and chip shop in Leicester. He says he will also most likely advertise for someone else who has fish and chip shop experience to work in the takeaway.
Plans include extending the flat-roofed garage and making internal alterations to provide a customer serving area, frying area and a small storage area at the back.
It’s also proposed that the garage and extension will be re-roofed to match the existing two-storey building.
Mr Odedra’s business was in the news last year when we asked if Weston Village Stores was the luckiest shop in our area.
Two customers had just had £20,000 Lottery wins. Before Mr Odedra bought the shop, another lucky person won £10,000 on the Health Lottery.
l The shop’s Post Office is extending opening hours to 7am-7.30pm Monday-Friday, 8am-7.30pm on Saturdays and 8am-1pm on Sundays.
