A warning has been issued after fraudsters have made telephone calls claiming to be from South Holland District Council or a fictitious ‘Spalding Town Council’.
The callers are trying to extract personal details from people.
A spokesman for the district council said this morning: “Please be aware that such calls are nothing to do with the council and are scams – we recommend that anyone who has received a call should report it to police.
You can report fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by telephone 0300 1232040.
The council has posted a warning on its Facebook page, where Janet Dutton commented: “I have just had one of these calls and I have reported it.
“The man with an Indian accent was trying to get details of any accidents. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he pretended to be a female with a high-pitched voice. It was such a Dick Emery moment I could not contain my giggles and had to hang up before I could get a number to call him back on.
“I know this is a very serious matter as there are many vulnerable people out there so please let others know about this. The phone number was not available, probably as it came from abroad, rather than being withheld.”
