Last week we were privileged to attend several events that honoured the work of our Armed Forces, past and present, writes Jan Whitbourn of Tulip Radio.
On Sunday we were in Hunstanton at one of two military weekends organised by Harold Payne, though getting the Royal Navy ambulance off the beach wasn’t so straightforward.
Monday was the official raising of the Armed Forces Week flag at South Holland District Council’s offices, attended by many councillors.
Tuesday saw the first Armed Forces parade through Spalding Market Place organised by the Royal Naval Association and leading forces personnel. It was well attended with many veterans, the Lord Lieutenant, leader of the council, councillors, serving members of the Armed Forces, Air Cadets, all led by Spalding Marching Ambassadors. The Market Traders Association in Spalding lobbied for the event and many attended.
Tulip Radio provided PA from the back of the trusty old ambulance, which prompted many elderly members of the community to reminisce.
Saturday was Armed Forces Day and many people attended marches and other events and some chose to visit the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
