Tuesday, 10am: The woman who died in Sunday night’s house fire has been named locally.
It was June Buffham, who was believed to have been in her 60s or 70s and semi-bedridden.
The cause of the fire, which ripped through the detached house in Stonegate on Sunday evening, is not yet known and the house was still cordoned off yesterday morning as the investigation continued.
It is believed Mrs Buffham shared the house with her husband Peter, who was out when the blaze started.
Neighbour Ray Gamble said he was alerted to the drama next door by another neighbour and went outside to find three fire engines and police outside.
He said: “I think June was at home on her own. I know they had to have a stairlift because she was semi-bedridden.
“Peter was out at his club and someone called him to tell him to come home. There was nothing he could do and he was just in a state of shock.”
Mr Gamble said he believed the couple had grown up children and thought Mr Buffham was now staying with family locally.
He added: “It was a terrible fire, it has melted the front door and all the windows are blackened. It’s very sad.”
Fire crews from Spalding and Holbeach were called to the scene at about 8.45pm. It is believed the blaze started in the lounge.
