Torrential rain in Spalding Market Place today (Thursday) saw the Costa coffee shop closing as water flooded the floor.

One customer told us she and others were asked to leave.

Another told us: “Basically they evacuated the shop. There were about 20-25 customers, something like that.

“They asked all of the customers to leave because water was coming through from the back – you could actually see it progressing along the floor.

“I think it was coming up through a ground drain or something and it was just working its way through the shop.

“They asked customers to eat up and drink up and vacate the shop.

It wasn’t an emergency evacuation or anything – they put people’s drinks into paper cups and they put their food into bags, so nobody had to be rushed out of the door, as it were.

The downpour began at about 1.30pm.

Staff were seen with mops and buckets and were still dealing with the incident in the mid-afternoon.

One customer was told the shop would reopen tomorrow.
