A weekly column from Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn.
Representatives from all sections of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets held a parade through Spalding to honour the work of our Armed Forces, past and present, who have helped to make this country the peaceful and stable part of Europe that it is.
This parade was part of Armed Forces week which is a comparatively recent government initiative to encourage us all to give thanks for the wonderful work of our Armed Forces. The week started at SHDC offices when the Armed Forces flag was raised and formal permission was given for the march through town.
The Spalding market traders have for some years requested such a parade and most seemed delighted to see us there. The march formed in Hall Place and came to a halt in the centre of Market Place where the Rev John Bennett conducted a short service and town centre manager Dennis Hannant sang.
It was heartening to see that most people stopped in the street and paused while the service took place. We were delighted to provide the public address system so more people could hear the service. We are currently collating interviews with serving and ex-members of the Armed Forces as part of the Armed Forces Community Covenant. If you were in the Armed Forces and would be happy to talk, call 01775 712400.
