Drivers in Spalding faced delays getting into work due to level crossings having to be shut for longer than usual on Tuesday morning.

People travelling along Park Road, Winsover Road and Pinchbeck Road found themselves stuck in traffic as trains were making their way through Spalding Rail Station.

A Network Rail spokesman admitted there had been problems with the operation of level crossings in the town over recent days just two months after the completion of the £280 million modernisation of the GNGE (Great Northern Great Eastern) line between Doncaster and Peterborough.

The spokesman said: “The level crossing manager for Winsover Road, Spalding, has confirmed that there were no faults with the barriers at the crossing.

“But there were two trains in the close vicinity of the crossing at the same time so barriers were down for longer to allow them to pass.

“However, our route control team has advised Network Rail of several level crossing issues in Lincolnshire on Tuesday.

“This is despite the fact of them not being aware of anything specifically at Winsover Road, Spalding, which would have caused traffic problems.”
