TRIBUTES have been paid to a cyclist who “died doing what he loved best” in an accident on Friday.

Kenneth Usher (77), of Dowsdale, Crowland, died while he was out cycling in Whaplode Drove following a collision with a car.

Emergency services were called out to Broadgate just after 1pm but Mr Usher died at the scene.

The 80-year-old driver of the Suzuki Wagon, who was from Spalding, was uninjured.

Competitive cyclist Mr Usher had travelled all over Britain and Europe for his sport.

He still holds a number of tricycle records, including three for the National Veterans Time Trails Association (VTTA).

A statement from his family said: “It is with the greatest sadness that our father and husband was tragically killed on his trike in an accident.

“Cycling was his life and in his 77 years he held a few good records, including the Mersey 24 Hour.

“He started in the Crouch Hill Cycling Club and joined many others, including the Witham Wheelers, BEC, plus clubs at Spalding, Peterborough, Cambridge and Icknield to name a few.

“He died doing what he loved best and is sorely missed by wife, Gladys, son, Paul, and daughter, Jayne.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support and comfort at this sad time.”

Tributes have also been paid to Mr Usher in the cycling world, with condolences made to his family from other cyclists across the country.

One from the Timetrialling Forum read: “How tragic. Met him a couple of times when handing him his winnings for fastest trike and standard awards. A great rider with numerous age standard records to his name.

“My sympathy to his family and friends.”

Another user described Mr Usher’s death as “devastating news”.

Mr Usher was the third person to be killed on Lincolnshire’s roads this year, compared to five at the same point in 2011.
