Less than a month to go and I, like almost any other sane individual, can’t wait to get this referendum over and done with.
Both sides seem to be degenerating into the antics of playground gangs in a spat – willing to do anything, say anything, to score another cheap point and get the greater sound-bite into the media.
St Paul, in his letter to the church in Ephesus, exhorts us to, “speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:25-27).
The truth is, when the sun sets on this referendum it is going to be close and therefore there will be a substantial part of our community that is going to be disappointed.
Yet we will continue to all be Spaldonians. We will continue to shop, work, relax and enjoy this fantastic community we live in – together.
So let us take Paul’s words to heart. Let us, ‘speak the truth in love’ (v15), but not forget that the love is probably more important than our limited perspective on truth.
