TABLE TENNIS: South Holland storm to impressive Cup win
SOUTH Holland were on fine form as the first round of the Spalding and District Table Tennis League’s Marylands Cup was all but completed.
With one of last year’s finalists already out, the field was open for someone to go for a trophy this season, writes ALLAN LEWIS.
The match results on the night were somewhat one-sided but closer examination showed that over a third of the ends came down to the last two points.
Division One leaders South Holland led the charge with a 5–0 win over newcomers Georgie Boys. Despite having to recover over 20 points, Holland only dropped one end, but just a couple of points the other way could have made matters much tighter.
League chasers JDM Allsorts took the first game against another newcomer, Baldy n Bob. They were then stunned to lose the second, before rallying to recover similar amounts in the last three games.
Bladerunners were drawn against top flight adversaries in Extel. After taking the first game they found the handicapping too much and went down in the remaining four.
Top Divison Two side Green Machine faced second placed Seriously Adrift, but were really only threatened twice and went through by 5–0.
Closest match of the night was Untitled versus Whipping Boys. A 1–4 scoreline to the latter proved to be much closer than seems with another game going to the wire.
The match between Castle Sports and Xbox Junkies was unfinished with one team a player short.
At the end of the evening Allan Lewis and Paddy Palgrave reached the final of the Val Mackey Doubles competition when they defeated John Gilbert and Luke Whitworth 11-8, 11-4, 11-7.
•Round two draw (to be played on January 5): Green Machine v Whipping Boys; Castle Sports or Xbox Junkies face JDM Allsorts; Extel meet Chunky & Chunkier; Table Tekkers or Pow! Play South Holland.
•Draw for the preliminary round of the Guardian Cup (to be played on January 12): JDM Allsorts v Chunky & Chunkier; Seriously Adrift v Georgie Boys; Bladerunners v Table Tekkers.
All matches can be played before these dates but the Handicap Secretary must be informed in advance.
