John Gray has been painting locally since the late 1970s and considers the South Holland Open Arts Exhibition an “important event in the artistic calendar”.

He and Helen Webber run Riverbank Studios in Spalding, introducing hundreds of students to art and helping them to improve their skills.

The “cultural desert” verdict on the district came as a surprise to John.

He says: “There is a lot going on and other artists working in the area, and a lot of our students have gone ahead and done quite good things from here, so our involvement in art in the community is quite strong.”

As well as the classes they run, John mentioned art lessons at the Lincolnshire Gallery, at Unique Cottage Studios and Norman Rossiter’s studio at Surfleet.
