STRAIGHT TALK: First shot fired in plans war

SO now we ALL finally know the favoured site for a new supermarket and cinema.

After enduring months of whispers and sniggering about a survey and then perceived inactivity, Richard Garvie has come to the table with a firm proposition. Not just pie in the sky but an agreement to buy the necessary land and interest from national chains to set up on it.

So just a mile apart we have Mr Garvie’s Sustainable Spalding with a viable venture and Corbo with its redevelopment plans for Holland Market and the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, which also include a new supermarket.

Could Spalding actually sustain and support both plans? Will one of the parties back down? Time will tell.

Mr Garvie would appear to not have the experience or business acumen of Michael Moran, the man driving the Holland Market plans on behalf of Corbo.

Yet he’s delivered a plan and promises to ask the public what else they would want on that site.

For that progress and vow at least, he deserves some respect.

Meanwhile, we residents can look forward to vastly improved leisure and shopping facilities – on one or more new sites.

And I haven’t even mentioned the ex-Welland Hospital site....

Please spare the time to read our heart-tugging story about little Joshua Holmes on page 9.

There are a lot of demands on your money nowadays but if you could spare a few quid to help buy a sensory equipment storage shed for a little boy who’s unable to even say ‘Mummy’ that would be a cheap but truly life-changing deed.
