Staff at a Pinchbeck store are set to come out fighting when they stage their fifth endurance challenge to raise money for Children in Need.
It’s become a tradition at Cross Bros Spar Shop, Knight Street, to take on an epic fundraiser in aid of the charity – and this year sees a 12-hour box-a-thon in store tomorrow (Friday).
Darrel Cross, of the shop, explained that 12 staff members will each take it in turns to throw blows at a punchbag, with the number of hits counted thanks to a special device attached to their arm.
Customers can pay £1 to guess how many punches the team accumulates and whoever gets the closest answer will win £50 to spend in the shop.
Darrel said: “We start at 7am and finish just as the programme starts on television. All the staff take part, doing it in half-hour shifts.
“The first year customers paid £1 to guess how far we travelled on an exercise bike, the second year we ran, the next year we used a strider and last year a step machine.”
As well as collecting donations Cross Bros will also be running several cost price offers – with the hope that customers will donate some of the money they have saved to the good cause.
Staff will also be running an instant win raffle where supporters stand the chance of winning prizes including a mountain bike and a Sony Smart Watch 2 worth £150.
“Over the four years we’ve raised more than £5,000,” said Darrel. “As a shop we wanted to support one charity – most people have children, and the television side also brings a lot of support as people get into it more.”
“As a child, growing up in Bourne, we used to go into Barclays and they would all get dressed up to raise money for the event and it inspired us.
“The whole event is really good – you cannot help but watch the programme and feel pleased that you’ve helped.
“The customers’ feedback is always brilliant and when they come in and start throwing £5 and £10 notes in the bucket it’s amazing.”
