Spalding war wedding creates exceptional interest

This newspaper reported “exceptional” interest in the 1916 marriage at Spalding Parish Church of Lieut Charles Lewis Harvey, eldest surviving son of Mr and Mrs H H Harvey, of ‘Willesby’, Spalding, and Kathleen Mary Taprell Gleed, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Gleed, of ‘West Elloe’, Spalding.

The photograph above, taken by Mr A S Gyde of Spalding, shows part of the “largest marriage assembly known for a quarter of a century” for the union of “two well-known families”.

Charles, who before the war worked as a solicitor and was deputy to his father as clerk to Spalding Urban Council, was serving with the 2/4th Lincolns and was expected to be drafted to the front within a few weeks.
