Keith Seaton, who has written a book about Spalding’s maritime history, says the seamen lived in the Holbeach Road, Commercial Road and Albion Street areas.

In fact, Keith lived in Commercial Road as a boy, but not because of any links to sailing, but because his family had moved into baking and lived in the old bakery.

However, Keith says he was attracted to the river from an early age, but didn’t know about his family’s maritime history until an uncle showed him a picture of his relations on the deck of a vessel and told him about the family’s ties to the maritime industry.

His book, The River Welland, Shipping & Mariners of Spalding, is due out in November. Published by The History Press, it costs £16.99. It will be available from Amazon and Bookmark in Spalding, where Keith is signing copies on November 28.
