The Lincolnshire Free Press of 100 years ago published a photograph of Lieutenant the Hon Francis McLaren MP, with an armoured motor car in a dug-out at the Dardanelles.

The report said General Sir Ian Hamilton – a senior officer in the British Army at that time, and most notable for commanding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Gallipoli Campaign – had frequently made reference to the useful work of the armoured cars and their crew.

It continued: “The picture will be of considerable interest to Mr McLaren’s constitutents in the Spalding Division.”

The inset photograph had been taken at Spalding, “shortly after the honourable member was gazetted lieutenant”.
