SHOPS, offices and cafes in Spalding town centre had to close their doors to customers at lunchtime when the electricity supply was interrupted for three hours.

Business and homes in The Crescent, Sheep Market, Abbey Yard, Victoria Street, Victoria Mews and New Road were affected by the power cut which started just before noon.

Problems extended to stores in Holland Market, including Halfords, although a back-up generator allowed Sainsburys to continue trading.

Traffic lights at the junction of Winsover Road and Station Street were also off during the power cut.

Engineers from power company E.ON were dispatched to the town to try to fix the problem and power was restored in stages, with most premises completely back on by 2.35pm.

Central Networks spokesman Victoria Blake said power was lost at 11.34am due to a blown fuse on the network.

Engineers had to isolate customers who were affected and power was restored to the 211 affected premises at 2.34pm.
