IT was a bittersweet birthday celebration for Spalding 5th Guides – marking their 85th anniversary while paying tribute to Patience Baden-Powell, who died recently,

The Monkshouse hut group, which caters for ages ten to 14, still has 25 members attending weekly, where they still maintain the same concepts of guiding.

The birthday celebrations also included a mark of respect after the death of Patience Baden-Powell, granddaughter-in-law of Robert Baden-Powell who founded the Scout and Guide Movements, and herself a former vice president and chief commissioner.

Liz Burnley, CBE Chief Guide said: “The thoughts of the whole guiding movement are with the Baden-Powell family at this sad time.”
