A Spalding fish and chip shop takeaway has been named as one of the top 50 in Britain for the second year in a row.
Oh My Cod made the list, published by Fry Magazine.Com, after an independent company sent mystery diners to shops the length and breadth of the country.
The undercover judges looked at things like staff friendliness, cleanliness of the premises and staff knowledge of the products on sale.
Points were also awarded for the quality of food with everything being judged such as the crispness of the batter, the size and fluffiness of the inside of chips and the flakiness and texture of the fish.
Oh My Cod is run by husband and wife team Bill and Sandy Rai.
They’re delighted to have made the top 50 list for a second year and can’t wait to put the 2016 poster declaring their success in the shop window.
Bill says keeping it simple is one of the keys to their success.
He said: “We have got one special, natural batter. We don’t add anything into our batter. A lot of people add salt and colouring and other stuff into it.
“We only use the healthiest vegetable oil to bring out the fish and chip flavours and it doesn’t leave an after-taste in the mouth like beef dripping.”
Another of their tricks of the trade is to put their fish and chip orders into cardboard boxes “because it keeps the batter crispy and stops the chips going soggy”.
Bill and Sandy took over the Alexandra Road premises four years ago, when it was known as Little Gem.
Bill says they invested in the business and relaunched it as Oh My Cod.
He said: “We just wanted a catchy name.”
• Keeping it simple may be the key to Oh My Cod’s success but the little shop has served up some weird and wonderful battered delicacies.
So far we’ve seen mince pies, Mars bars and Cadbury Creme Eggs ... and next it will be Oreo biscuits.
Bill has already perfected the art of battering and cooking Oreos and will be serving them soon.
