A Spalding chippy is hoping his latest addition to the menu will get customers rather egg-cited this Easter.
Spurred on by the success of recent unusual offerings, Bill Rai, who owns Oh My Cod, is deep frying crème eggs alongside the more traditional fare of fish ‘n’ chips for a limited period.
Mr Rai, who has run the shop in Alexandra Road for the past three years, was pleasantly surprised when his battered mince pies proved a Christmas hit, while last month’s offering of deep fried Mars Bars were also a great success.
He said customer requests had led him to try adding more unusual items to the menu.
“Since Christmas we’ve had people asking for different things – I know crème eggs have been done before, but they’ve never been sold in this area so we thought we’d give it a go.
“We started last Wednesday and we’ve had a few people come in asking for them already,” he added.
The eggs, which cost 80p each, contain around 350 calories and are cooked to order.
“They are quite nice,” added Mr Rai. “Personally, I’m not a big fan of crème eggs but I’ve tried them fried and they actually taste quite nice – they still have that crème egg crunch to them.
“I think after we’ve done these we’ll be taking a bit of a rest from the unusual though – this is just for Easter.
“But people really need to try them – just once – before they say they don’t like them!”

Well, I was actually pleasantly surprised. If I’m honest the eggs didn’t look very appetising and I had expected not to like them at all, but the batter was crisp and contrasted well with the sweet melting chocolate inside.
My three-year-old son Peter, who can be a fussy eater sometimes, also gave them a big thumbs up – and asked for seconds!
