Spalding chippie Oh My Cod can rightfully claim to be one of the best 50 in the UK after an industry-wide poll.

The chip shop in Alexandra Road, run by Bill and Sandeep Rai, was one of just four in Lincolnshire to make the top 50 after a survey by Fry Magazine.

Each shop on the list were scored by a mystery diner on ingredients, including customer service, front-of-house hygiene, presentation of staff and the quality fish and chips prepared.

Bill said: “We were one of just under 500 chip ships from across the UK to enter the vote and being a small, family-run business, we never expected to achieve top marks.

“There was a lot of competition from bigger shops and franchises, so it means a lot to us that all the hard work and long hours that we’ve all put in has been worth it.”

Oh My Cod was reopened under its present name after an extensive refit by Bill and Sandeep two years ago.

The couple are helped in serving customers by staff members Jamie Hume and Amelia Wicks.

“We’ve had quite good feedback from customers since they found out about the top 50 award and we’ve been busier than we normally are,” Bill said.

“I’d like to thank all our staff and customers for their efforts and support.”

Poll organiser Reece Head said: “It was a tough set of criteria that our judges marked to, but we had fantastic support from the industry and sponsors that can see the value this competition brings in raising standards across the fish and chip shop sector.

“It is also a real testament to the procedures, practices and staff in place at those outlets which made the top 50 for 2015.”
