Bookmark of Spalding has chosen Ladybird’s series of grown-up guides as its pick of the week.

The children’s publisher has embraced the trend for spoofing its classic guides by launching a humorous series for adults dealing with modern problems such as The Husband, The Wife, The Shed, The Hangover, Dating, Mindfulness, The Mid-life Crisis and The Hipster.

Ladybird’s grown-up guides form part of the publisher’s centenary celebrations. Once famous for its earnest, wholesome books that introduced British children to topics such as space travel, the publisher is launching a series of guides to help adults make sense of modern life.

Embracing the trend for spoof Ladybird editions that juxtapose the twee and genteel imagery with captions rewritten for comic effect, the eight new books are penned by Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris, the writers of the BBC comedy show Miranda.

Illustrations of bearded, pipe-smoking men and women with immaculate hair appear alongside the large, simple script, which Hazeley has described as “light and silly and funny”.

The books retail for £6.99 but there is 20 per cent off at Bookmark until Wednesday, November 25 with the voucher in the Spalding Guardian of November 19.
