LOCAL counselling service SPACE4U has applied for a grant to help spread the benefit it can give to more people in mental distress.

The service has been based at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding, since it was set up in 2007 to give people aged 13-plus access to a volunteer professional counsellor, paying only what they can afford towards costs.

Counselling co-ordinator Frances Garland said: “Assessment of our clients shows a startling drop in average distress rating to 10 percent of the score before counselling started.

“On the basis of that level of risk reduction, we’re applying to the county council’s Mental Illness Prevention Fund. We need to reach out – we know the demand is there.”
