Schools in South Holland spread happiness with shoebox appeal

Schools across South Holland have been spreading a little happiness by sending gifts to children in Eastern Europe who might otherwise not receive presents this Christmas.

The Spalding Guardian hopped on the Shoebox Appeal express run by the Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland and visited four schools in the area – Spalding’s St John the Baptist CE Primary School, Weston St Mary’s C of E School, Cowbit St Mary’s Church of England Endowed Primary School and Spalding St Paul’s County Primary School.

Each gift of a shoebox containing toys, toiletries, educational items or household goods is likely to end up in Albania, Belarus, Moldova, Romania or Ukraine.

Rotary member Kate Start said: “I was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown by all of the children we met today – every single one of those that participated are a credit to their families, their schools and their communities.

“Their shoeboxes will be gratefully received by a child who would otherwise not have a gift this Christmas and I am sure that they will bring great joy and excitement.”

Pupil Beth Lovegrove, of St John the Baptist CE School said: “We take it for granted when we get our gifts. I’m so excited to be able to help another child in Eastern Europe who wouldn’t get gifts be happy at Christmas.”

Bruce Johnson, headteacher at Cowbit St Mary’s Church of England Endowed Primary School, said he was also impressed with the generosity of his pupils and parents. A box of gifts had also been donated to them for the appeal by Morrisons. He said: “Some children had given gifts that had meant a lot to them.”

At St Paul’s County Primary School, pupil Staci Winkett said: “My box has socks, toothpaste, hair bobbles and gloves in it. “I wanted a child who wouldn’t get anything to have things for Christmas.”
