After the massive success of Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, Disney continues its recent trend of turning some of its fairy tales into full-blown blockbuster spectacles, writes Gavin Miller.

Downton Abbey’s Lily James stars as the title character – who ends up winning the heart of a prince – with two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett as her bullying wicked step-mother, Lady Tremaine, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ella’s Fairy Godmother, as director Kenneth Branagh adds his own visionary twists to the classic tale.
