Respects paid to fallen airmen

FALLEN airmen have been remembered at an annual service held in Sutton Bridge.

For the first time since its inception, the weather forced the propeller service into St Matthew’s Church, away from its usual position around the monument on the east side of the bridge.

The Rev Judith Dunkling officiated at the service, which included six standard bearers. Parish councillor David Dewsberry read a passage from Micah 4 v 1:4, and Coun Chris Brandon-King read a poem written by an airman who died in 1941. The mayors of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, and Wisbech, along with the chairman of South Holland District Council were also present to pay their respects.

Afternoon tea refreshments were provided in the church, arranged by the parish clerk, Suzanne England, and assisted by two volunteers Anne Jackson and Adey Garwell.
