The votes have been counted and the winner announced: Renaissance Hair Salon is officially the South Holland Salon of the Year, as chosen by the readers of the Spalding Guardian.
Gemma Louth (32), co-owner of the hairdressers on New Road, Spalding, was delighted when the news was announced, if not a bit shocked.
“I didn’t think we would win because I knew there were lots of other salons in the contest that I thought people would vote for.”
Renaissance beat off competition from 11 other hairdressers who reached the final, including entries from Spalding, Donington, Holbeach and Sutton Bridge.
Gemma opened the salon in January 2011 with business partner Katy Rodgers (31), both of whom work as hairdressers in the shop alongside two other stylists and a receptionist.
“Katy and I were both employed in another salon for 10 years before we decided to go into business together. We initially set up a mobile company to raise funds and after 18 months we were able to open the shop.”
When asked why she thought Renaissance was the readers’ choice, Gemma felt that their assets were clear.
“Although we are a small salon, we treat our clients more like friends and they feel like they can just pop in whenever. We also get involved in the community with charity events and raffles.”
“Not only this, but we offer up-to-date hair dos, with the ombre style proving very popular.”
Clients were similarly enthusiastic about the salon.
Shirley Rodgers from Boston said: “Renaissance is so beautifully decorated and the staff always do such a wonderful job.
“I have had my hair done today ready for summer and I feel thoroughly spoilt.”
According to staff, the salon is a great place to work too.
Gary Ling, one of the stylists, said: “It’s not really like coming to work as we have all been friends for such a long time. I think that definitely gives the shop a relaxed feeling that appeals to clients.”
Gemma went on to say: “Winning Salon of the Year 2014 has given us such a boost and we would like to thank all those who voted for us.”
