Around 500 animal-lovers spent their Sunday making friends with meerkats, monkeys and even an alligator.

The Exotic Pet Refuge at Deeping St James held its latest summer open day, where guests were treated to viewings of some weird and wonderful species – and helped raise more than £4,000.

The money is vital to cover the costs of feeding and homing the animals – with some of the money put aside for the winter when the refuge’s heating bill sees costs spiral.

Owner Pam Mansfield said: “It went very well. We didn’t have quite as many people as last time because people weren’t sure if it was going to rain.

“But everyone who came said it was an amazing place and we were very pleased with the feedback.

“We are so grateful to everyone who continues to support us.”

Other animals at the refuge include lynx, porcupine, wolf, stork, pot belly pigs and a variety of reptiles.
