Raft race raises a laugh as teams let rip on the river

More than 30 teams made the 2013 Deepings Raft Race a day to remember.

An Hawaiian theme saw competitors dressed in grass skirts and sarongs – not to mention a bikini or two (and not just on the women) as raft racers battled to be the best.

As always, not every home-made raft was a roaring success, with more thanone team experiencing that sinking feeling or taking a dive, but plenty did make it past the finish line.

The best dressed raft title was won by a team from Deepings Co-op, with their Mario Kart themed raft and fancy dress.

The pub race was won by The Stage, the main race by Baker Perkins Alligators, the fun race by Animates, the ladies’ race by the Raunchy Rafters – who announced they were retiring and would not be competing in future events – and the under 16s event was won by the Iron Horse under 16s.

Trophies were handed over later in the day by South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes.

Kevin Barber, chairman of the raft race committee, said: “It was a long day but a great fun day.

“It was all about the community coming together and enjoying a good day.

“There was good entertainment and it was good for local businesses.”

Organisers are also delighted enough money was raised to kickstart plans for next year’s raft race.
